Meeting for a Liberal Democrat summit ahead of the European Council, Liberal Democrat Prime Ministers condemned protectionism and argued for more competition in the European market.Annemie Neyts Uyttebroeck stressed that “Liberal Leaders want more competition in the European energy market so that consumers benefit from increased quality of services and lower prices. What should concern us most is not who owns the company but the consumers”.In a reference to an alleged letter from Italy’s finance minister against protectionism, Belgian Prime minister Guy Verhofstadt warned EU leaders against widening splits. “Those who want to send such letters have to be aware of protectionism themselves,” Verhofstadt declared. “We do not want any form of protectionism inside the EU.
