ELDR Vice President Markus Löning and political advisor Daniel Tanahatoe visited Armenia on 2 and 3 February 2010 to meet with representatives of the Armenian National Movement (ANM), a political party which applied for ELDR membership in 2009. While in 1991, after its independence from the Soviet Union, Armenia became a democratic country with some major liberal reforms being implemented, over the last years there has been a growing tendency towards an authoritarian regime with falsified elections, corruption and very close ties between politicians and the business world.
