CONGRESS IN GRONINGEN 5-7 JUNE 1985 (16/05/2006)

Colette Flesch (DP) was elected the ELD President. David Steel (British Liberal Party) and Uffe Ellemann-Jensen (Venstre) became Vice-Presidents.

The main subjects of debate at the congress were:

- the impact of energy production on the environment

- the protection of democracy and civil liberties in Europe

- reform of European Community Institutions.

New Member Parties

In December 1985 the Partido Reformista Democratico "P.R.D." (Spain) joined the ELD, after having had Observer status since 1983.

In February 1986 the Partido Social-Democrata "P.S.D." (Portugal) became a new member party.
