One of the central issues in the European Union (EU) today is energy security. It is clear that several large energy producers outside the EU are trying to manipulate the EU by selling energy cheaper than that which is produced in the EU, thus aiming at monopolizing the energy market and dictating prices to the consumers.
The reason this energy is cheap is also because those producers are not restricted by environmental regulations. In the EU as well as Russia, nearly 80% of electricity is produced with CO2 emissions as a result of burning gas and coal. However, CO2 emissions in Russia are not treated the same way as in the EU, thus, Russian electricity is on the average 30-40% cheaper than the electricity produced in Europe. (more…)
