A European strategy for Iraq

The European countries share a unique history and cultural heritage. Like no other part of the world, the European countries have fostered democracy, rule of law and respect for human rights. On the other hand, no other part of the world has seen the bloodshed that has shaped so much of the European history. The formation of the European Union is not a coincidence; it’s a natural response to the continent’s history.

The European history has also, for better and worse, shaped the history in other parts of the world. colonialism is a part of the European past that still haunts relations between Europe and almost every other corner of the world. Whether we like it or not, Europe has global responsibilities.

This is also true for the fundamental values that shape the Union. Democracy, rule of law and human rights are timeless and placeless. Our commitment to these values within the Union itself calls for action outside the Union as well.

My campaign for a seat in the European Parliament has focused on the European global role. My firm belief is that the EU can be a Benevolent Great Power. For Europe it’s a responsibility just as much as an opportunity. My report focuses on the European policy towards Iraq, where Europe could play a decisive role, provided that the European countries are ready to face the challenges ahead.
