IDV summer school: “A <gag law> could soon affect democracy in Italy”

eldr, lundi 5 juillet 2010 18:10 :: Di Pietro , Italy , Summer School

Last week in the European Parliament, a crowded meeting room welcomed Leoluca Orlando MP, ELDR Vice-President and MEP Niccolo’ Rinaldi, both representing ELDR Member party Italia dei Valori (IDV) in the framework of the IDV Summer School to protest against a bill which in Italy is known as the Alfano bill or “gag law”.

“This bill intends to “gag” police and judges in the discharge of their duties and “silence” journalists by hindering them to inform citizens,” explained the gagged Leoluca Orlando, one of the main supporters of the protest.
On 12 June 2010, this anti-phone tapping bill already received the “green light” by the Italian Senate. It foresees penalties of up to € 450.000 for editors or even detention until 4 years for journalists. It was put into place to prohibit the leaking of phone and wire-taped conversations on criminal probes to mainstream media and online media.
Niccolo Rinaldi’ shared his concern: “We are all here with a gag, and despite being very tired, we won’t give up to an unfair bill which is against European principles.”
“If the bill would be approved - concluded Orlando - Italy will become a dictatorship and would not adhere anymore to European standards.”
In Rome, a demonstration organized by IDV took place on the 1st of July.
